SUCCESSION – understood as a conscious and planned action, can have a very positive effect on stability in the company in the long run. Research shows that change always causes stress but it is also a natural part of the development process, therefore it is well-worth the preparation.
Poorly planned and prepared succession is usually a start of a chain of unfavorable decisions and events. It decreases effectiveness, causes anxiety, demotivation and too much focus on emotions instead of tasks. The lack of the identification with the leader can also cause conflict within a team and increase employees’ fear for their future in the organization. Ultimately, it can lead to internal crisis and employees leaving the company.
Succession, as a well-thought-out process of internal recruitment closely tied to the accomplishments of the guidelines of the career path, offers mutual benefits. It is a great motivator for the employees – management notices them and prefers internal candidates, and moreover, it gives a real opportunity for personal growth and development.
