5S – workplace organization and standardization •

5S is one of the basic lean tools and one of the first steps towards building lean system that ensures improved effectiveness.

Scope of work

5S focuses on organizing all spaces so work can be performed efficiently, effectively and safely. This can be accomplished by finding, removing and eliminating waste around the workstation (sort), coming up with optimal strategies for organizing the remaining items (straighten), cleaning up the work area, daily housekeeping and performing regular maintenance on equipment and machinery (shine), developing work standards for each workstation (standardize), ensuring effective implementation of the standards and performing ongoing work of maintaining those procedures and updating them as necessary (sustain).

5S tool is a key to: locating and eliminating the source of waste and redundant activities, reducing costs, eliminating causes of errors that impact quality, removing limitations and barriers for improving effectiveness – essential to every organization, regardless of the business profile.
